Yesterday, Sunday, a forward looking infrared scan was conducted to locate hotspots. The scan enabled crews to directly attack hotspots and this will continue today with aircraft waterbombing these areas. 50,810 hectares of the Morton National Park have been burnt to date.
4 December - 1415 * Hot temperatures and high winds have caused the Touga Bushfire to flare up again. Crews from all Group 1 Brigades, (Beaumont, Broughton Vale, Cambewarra, Illaroo Rd., Kangaroo Valley & Shoalhaven Heads), were dispatched to assemble at the Cambewarra Rural Fire Station Staging Area, in anticipation of the fire jumping across the Shoalhaven River and threatening the Illaroo and Bugong areas.
Within minutes of leaving Beaumont Fire Station, Beaumont Brigade together with other Brigades headed for Cambewarra Station, were redirected to the Agars Bushfire burning in the Seven Mile Beach National Park and on private land, north of Shoalhaven Heads.
Beaumont Brigade patroled the northern fringes of the Shoalhaven Heads township, close to the southern edge of the fire, in the even that property protection was required. At around 1600, a Task Force of NSW (Metropolitan) Fire Brigades from Balgownie and Ulladulla and areas in between, relieved the Group 1 Brigades, which were again directed to assemble at the Cambewarra Staging Area.
At around 1930, while patroling the Illaroo Road and Bugong Road areas, again in anticipation of spotovers from the Touga Bushfire, it was reported that, as a result of a change in wind direction, the Touga Bushfire had crossed Braidwood Road, west of Nowra, and was now threatening the Naval Air Station, HMAS Albatross. As a result, all Group 1 crews were redeployed to Albatross Road.
Upon arrival at HMAS Albatross, the intensity and speed of the fire was such that the only possible course of action was property protection. In addition to protecting a number of properties on Albatross Road, the Beaumont crew also conducted property protection operations in Gannet Road, between Braidwood Road and Cabbage Tree Lane.
At 2345, the original Beaumont crew was stood down and relieved by another crew from the Beaumont Brigade. The relief crew from Beaumont continued with property protection operations as the fire progressed into the Yawal Road area.
From where the fire crossed over Braidwood Road onto HMAS Albatross, at about 1915, during the night it spread about 3km along BTU Road, towards the Princes Highway; throughout the Gannet Road/Cabbage Tree Lane area; along Albatross Road for about 3km and north to Yawal Road. The relief crew was stood down at about 0800 the following morning, 5 December. While a small number of sheds and a tyre warehouse were either destroyed or seriously damaged and almost 500 residents were evacuated, no homes were destroyed.
5 December - 2030 * As a result of a southerly wind change, a crew from Beaumont has was dispatched to assist the Shellharbour Task Force as the Agars Bushfire began to threaten homes in the Beach Road area of Berry. Fortunately, the wind change was shortly followed by a heavy shower of rain, which provided considerable assistance in bringing the bushfire under control.
6 December - 0700 * As the Touga Bushfire enters it's second month, a crew from Beaumont, together with RFS crews from all over the Shoalhaven Region, a Task Force of RFS crews from the Riverina Region and crews of the NSW (Metropolitan) Brigades from the South Coast continued to build containment lines around existing hot spots, in an attempt to bring the fire under control. However, NW to SW winds, gusting up to 80kph, have caused spot overs in many areas, creating new problems.
The Beaumont crew started the day patroling the north side of the Shoalhaven River, in the Illaroo Farm and Bundanon area. (The possibility of spot overs from the south side poses a constant threat to all parts of the northern Shoalhaven Region.)
At around 1200, Beaumont was redeployed to the Bamarang Nature Reserve, 6km SW of Nowra, where a going fire was threatening to jump across Yawal Road. About 12 other crews and 6 waterbombing helicopters were also in attendance. Early in the afternoon, a sudden wind change caused an emergency evacuation of the area by all ground crews.
In the absence of the ground crews, the fire jumped Yawal Road and entered the Nature Reserve. As conditions eased, crews re-entered the area and began containing the newly burnt out area, attacking further spot overs and continued mopping up.
At around 1900, the area on the south side of Yawal Road was secured, the Beaumont crew was stood down and was replaced by a second crew from the Beaumont Brigade.
6 December - 1900 * The second crew from Beaumont was deployed to Grassy Gully Road, near Coolendel, about 13km west of Nowra, to continue with to backburning operations and strengthen containment lines in that sector of the Touga Bushfire. During the night weather conditions deteriorated and the fire began to spot over containment lines in various directions creating threats to properties.
8 December - 1330 A crew from Beaumont was despatched to the Cambewarra Staging Area. On arrival, they were deployed to patrol the Illaroo Farm area. During the afternoon a number of spot fires from the Touga Bushfire were located and extinguished.
